Falling for Fall

Categories: Lifestyle Homes | Posted: September 12, 2016

With this heat its hard to imagine that Fall is only 10 days away! But, we sure are excited for it to be here.  The cool Fall weather is the perfect time to get all those little things done around the house you’ve just been putting off.

Here are some of the things we think are great to do this time of year:

  1.  Clean out the gutters:  Before the leaves fall you want to make sure your gutters are cleaned out to avoid any clogs.  Your gutters protect your homes exterior and wall from thousands of gallons of water each year.  Any backups could potentially cause a leak.
  2. Cover your faucets:  I know its not freezing yet, but if you wait until those freezing cold days there will be no covers left at the hardware store.  Covering your faucets will help prevent frozen or possibly even busted pipes.
  3. Check your detectors! Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors can save your life but only if they are working properly.  Fall is a great time to change out the batteries and make sure they are functioning.
  4. Schedule a furnace checkup.  Once the cold weather hits HVAC companies will likely be slammed with service calls.  Checking for any problems now could save a lot of money and a real cold night.
  5. Clean up outside.  For some this could be cleaning out the garage for others cutting dead branches off trees.  All things that tend to be avoided in the summer due to high temperatures.

While these are certainly not all of the things that can be done they are definitely some of our favorites.  Let us know if you have any favorite fall home improvement tips we didn’t mention.

How to Beat This Mississippi Heat!!

Categories: Lifestyle Homes, Uncategorized | Posted: July 18, 2016

I think we all know what this is like right about now!  With the temperatures rising this week we wanted to let everyone know our favorite ways to stay cool!

1. First and foremost, we LOVE staying in one of our energy efficient homes!  Not only do they save you money on utilities, but they keep you nice and cool when it is just to hot to be outside.

2. Drink more water

We all know hydration is important all year, but in this heat it is crucial that you drink enough water.  The CDC gives us a great example of why this is important.

When your body temperature gets hotter than normal — 98.6 degrees — your brain sends out a distress signal that causes you to sweat, which cools you down. Think of it this way — your body, like an air conditioner, has an internal thermostat that helps control its temperature. Whenever your body heats up from physical activity or the hot weather outside, your internal air conditioner turns on and you begin to sweat. And remember, now that your air conditioner is using its coolant (your sweat), it is important to refill the tank — by drinking lots of H2O.

3. Try to keep excessive sweating minimized

A few tricks are to put on antiperspirant at night and wearing breathable clothes.  Wearing cotton or sweat wicking materials in the summer will pull sweat away from your skin and let in more air.  It is also helpful to wear light colors and loose fitting clothing.

Did you know that there are more sweat glands per inch in our feet than anywhere else on our bodies?   With 250,000 sweat glands wearing shoes that accommodate the heat is important too.

4. Avoid cooking

Yes you read that right.  Cooking can heat up the house and yourself standing over a hot oven or grill.  Eating cold foods in the summer really can help to keep you cool.  Raw foods such as salads, fruits, and vegetables are great options.  Not only are they super healthy, but they are easier for your body to process.  When your body has to digest a hamburger for example it takes a lot more energy and heats up your body.

If you do want to cook. Try cooking several meals at once so that you do not have to do it later in the week.

5. Switch up your exercise routine

Try to get your workout in early in the morning or late in the evening so it’s not in the hottest part of the day.  Swimming is also a great alternative.  Not only does it keep you cool, but you get a tan in the process.

We would love to hear your favorite ways of keeping cool this summer!

Energy Efficient Lifestyle Homes

Categories: Energy Efficient, Lifestyle Homes, Uncategorized | Posted: May 28, 2015

Here at Lifestyle Homes we pride ourselves on building energy efficient homes to keep your cost down! Check out our website to see some of the things we do to make your home energy efficient.

If you are looking for more ways to save energy this summer we have put together a list of our favorite ways.

  • Do not leave doors open.
  • Turn off all of your lights and unplug electronics when they are not being used.  If you get a power strip you can turn off several items at one time!
  • Program your programable thermostat.
  • Close the blinds and shades.  Not only does it keep the sun from heating the house, but keeps you from needing sunglasses inside.
  • Change your light bulbs to energy efficient bulbs.  You will save money and not have to replace them as often.
  • Change your air filters often.  A dirty filter will make your system work harder increasing cost.  Your allergies might even get better with a new filter.
  • Turn your air conditioner up or off when you leave the house for the day.
  • Decide what you want to eat Before you open the refrigerator.  We let out so much cold air when we stand there with the door open deciding what to eat.  Also, let food cool before putting it in the fridge.
  • Use different methods of cooking.  An outside grill or the microwave are great options for the warm months because they do not heat the house.
  • Hang dry your laundry.  Using the drying uses more energy and heats the house.  You can’t beat free energy and non-shrunken clothes!
  • Take a cooler and shorter shower.
  • Have your air conditioner serviced and cleaned to maintain proper functioning and keep your system working for years.
  • Enjoy the weather!  The more time you spend outside the less energy you will use inside.
  • Make sure your air vents are not blocked by drapes or furniture.
  • Use ceiling fans when in a room. Just the air movement can help you feel cooler. They don’t cool the room though, just you, so be sure to turn them off when you leave.
  • Use the dishwasher (only when it is full).  Did you know the dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand.

We hope you find our tips helpful!

New intersections in Oxford, MS!

Categories: Oxford | Posted: August 13, 2014

With Oxford constantly growing and the University of Mississippi continually growing each year, several changes took place over the summer. There is currently construction on Highway 6 at the Jackson Ave. light, and construction just ended at Highway 6 and Old Taylor.

There is a new roundabout we all need to figure out how to operate when traveling on Old Taylor Rd. It is unlike the one on Lamar, as it has two lanes instead of one! I have attached a video simulation on how it works.

Old Taylor

These changes were made to help the flow of traffic not only on game days, but for students headed to class as well.

We are so excited for school to be starting back and for football season to start! Everyone watch these videos and drive safe when heading to Oxford.
