I think we all know what this is like right about now! With the temperatures rising this week we wanted to let everyone know our favorite ways to stay cool!
1. First and foremost, we LOVE staying in one of our energy efficient homes! Not only do they save you money on utilities, but they keep you nice and cool when it is just to hot to be outside.
2. Drink more water
We all know hydration is important all year, but in this heat it is crucial that you drink enough water. The CDC gives us a great example of why this is important.
When your body temperature gets hotter than normal — 98.6 degrees — your brain sends out a distress signal that causes you to sweat, which cools you down. Think of it this way — your body, like an air conditioner, has an internal thermostat that helps control its temperature. Whenever your body heats up from physical activity or the hot weather outside, your internal air conditioner turns on and you begin to sweat. And remember, now that your air conditioner is using its coolant (your sweat), it is important to refill the tank — by drinking lots of H2O.
3. Try to keep excessive sweating minimized
A few tricks are to put on antiperspirant at night and wearing breathable clothes. Wearing cotton or sweat wicking materials in the summer will pull sweat away from your skin and let in more air. It is also helpful to wear light colors and loose fitting clothing.
Did you know that there are more sweat glands per inch in our feet than anywhere else on our bodies? With 250,000 sweat glands wearing shoes that accommodate the heat is important too.
4. Avoid cooking
Yes you read that right. Cooking can heat up the house and yourself standing over a hot oven or grill. Eating cold foods in the summer really can help to keep you cool. Raw foods such as salads, fruits, and vegetables are great options. Not only are they super healthy, but they are easier for your body to process. When your body has to digest a hamburger for example it takes a lot more energy and heats up your body.
If you do want to cook. Try cooking several meals at once so that you do not have to do it later in the week.
5. Switch up your exercise routine
Try to get your workout in early in the morning or late in the evening so it’s not in the hottest part of the day. Swimming is also a great alternative. Not only does it keep you cool, but you get a tan in the process.
